His Grace was born in 1936 at Nellikkal, Koipram Village in Thiruvalla Taluk
as the second son to Perumethmannil Mr PK Mathai and Mrs Sosamma. He has one
brother and two sisters. He belonged to Mathur Parish in Chengannoore Diocese.
After his schooling, he joined Kerala University and did his graduation, post
graduation in Science and B.Ed from Catholicate College, Pathanahitta and
Mount Tabore Training College Pathanapuram respectively. Thereupon His Grace
was teaching Botany at Catholicate College, Pathanamthitta, until he was
elected to the Episcopal order.
He became a priest in 1964 after his studies at Orthodox Theological Seminary,
Kottayam. He was also a member of St Basil Daya, Pathanamthitta. His Grace
also served the Thumpamon Diocese as Secretary of Priests, Thumpamon Diocese.
He was ordained a Bishop in 1991 and was given charge of the newly formulated
Sultan Battery Diocese. And is serving it with all vigour and enthusiasm. His
spiritual strength has helped the diocese to grow in all aspects within a
short span of time.
His Grace is actively involved in many social activities. He is the President
of a special school for mentally challenged children--Olivemala and Baselious
Gregorios Mercy Home. He has so far extended helping hands to 50 girls in
their marriage and assisted 250 people in putting up houses. He is active in
providing employment assistance to poor women and has thus proved 150 sewing
machines. He also runs a secret fund and educational fund for the economically
weaker sections.
He has also taken keen interest in a project, which is set up in Karnataka. In
a place called �Kushal Nagar� he has bought 50 acres of land and looks after
the developmental works of the church.
His Grace has many published articles to his credit. He is known for his
simplicity and sweet voice.
March 1st 2009 onwards he assumed full responsibility as Metropolitan of
Thumpamon Diocese.
History of the Diocese
The Thumpamon diocese was formed in 1876 by bringing together 21 Churches.
Konatt Geevarghese Mar Julios (1876-1884), Parumala Geevarghese Mar Gregorios
(1884-1902), Yuuakim Mar Ivanios (1913-1925), Puthencavu Geevarghese Mar
Philexinos (1930-1951), Daniel Mar Philexinos (1953-1990) successively
undertook the administrative responsibilities of the Diocese.
Pulikkotil Joseph Mar Dionysius, Vattasseril Geevarghese Mar Dionysius, and
Baselios Oughen 1 who were Malankara Metropolitans have also taken up direct
administrative responsibilities of the diocese. Form I August 1985 Philopose
Mar Eusebios was the Assistant Metropolitan. From 1991 onwards he
was the Diocesan Metropolitan.From
2009 onwards Kuriyakose Mar
Climis has been the Head of the Diocese.
There are in the Diocese 4 Cathedrals, 107 Churches, 14 Chapels, 3 Rambans, 8
Cor Episcopa, 91 Priests, 6 deacons and 16 Seminarians. The 3 I.T.C at Mylapra,
Kaippatoor and Thannithode and Mar Philexinos Memorial building complex at
Pathanamthitta are institutions belonging to the diocese. The headquarters of
the diocese is Basil Aramana in Pathanamthitta.
