H.G. Yuhanon Mar Dioscoros, belongs to the Kallarackal Kaleelil family of
Kundara, Thiruvananthapuram diocese, born as the son of P T Mathunny Panicker
& Late Mrs. Kunjamma Panicker on 28 May 1964 . His parent parish is St. Thomas
Orthodox Valiyapally, Kundara. He obtained his B.Sc degree from Kerala
University(1984), theological diploma (GST) from Orthodox Seminary, Kottayam,
Bachelor of Divinity (B.D) from Serampore University (1988), and Master of
Theology (1991) and Doctor of Theology (1995) from the Pontifical Oriental
Institute in Rome. He also holds a certificate in Pastoral Counselling from
Glasgow University, Scotland (1997).
He was ordained as Sub-deacon on 13 June 1987 and Deacon on 15 May 1989 and on
3 June 1989 he was ordained to the Holy priesthood by the late H.G.
Geevarghese Mar Dioscorus, Metropolitan of Trivandrum Diocese. He was the
director of Holy Trinity Centre for Disabled Children, Trivandrum(1990-91),
Professor and Registrar of the Holy Trinity Theological College, Addis Ababa
of the Ethiopean Orthodox Church (1994-1997), and the Programme Secretary,
Sophia Centre, Kottayam (1997-2006).
He served as the vicar of Sreekaryam Mar Baselios Gregorios, TVM (1989-90),
Makkulam St. George, TVM (1997-2000), Narickal St. Mary�s, TVM (2000-03),
Valakam Mar Gregorios, TVM (2003-06), Koorthamala St. Mary�s, Chengannoor
(Asst. Vicar, 1998-02), Kurichimuttom St. Stephen�s, Chengannoor (Vicar,
2002-04) Pullad St. George, Chengannoor (2004-06) and now serving a the
Chaplain of Old Seminary, Kottayam and the Vicar of Kundara Kadeestha, TVM,
from 2006 onwards.He is currently the Professor and Dean of Studies of
Orthodox Theological Seminary, Kottayam, Registrar of Divyabodhanam-the laity
theological training programme of the Church, Joint Secretary of St. Thomas
Orthodox Vaidika Sanghom, Chief Editor of Malankara Sabha Monthly, Publisher
of Purohithan Quarterly, Editorial Board Member of Bethel Pathrika, Editorial
Board Member of St. Ephrem Theological Journal, (Satna), Executive Committee
Member of TLC, Thiruvalla, Member of the Joint International Dialogue between
Roman Catholic Church and Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church
He has authored five books and numerous articles and a good preacher, teacher
and a retreat father.
March 1st 2009 onwards he assumed as Metropolitan of Madras Diocese.
History of the Diocese The Madras Diocese was created in 1976 by bringing
together the Churches in Andhra, Karnataka, TamilNadu, Malaysia, Singapore and
Australia. Stephanos Mar Thevodosios took charge of the administration
(1976-79) as the first Metropolitan. Thereafter Zechariah Mar Dionysius
(1979-1997) became the head of the diocese. From August 1997 onwards Dr.Yakob
Mar Irenios has been in charge of Madras Diocese on behalf of His Holiness
Catholicose.
There are 48 Churches, 7 Cathedrals, 11 Chapels, 2 Rambans, 6 Cor Episcopas,
42priests and 8 Seminarians in the diocese.
The Sneha Bhavan in Vellore and Orthodox Christian Service Society in
Bangalore are functioning under the supervision of the diocese. The
Metropolitan headquarters is 11/2 K.m away on the Surapet Road, which can be
reached by alighting at Vinayakapuram, which is a few kilometers away from the
Madras Central Railway Station.
Former Diocese of Madras was consisted of present Calcutta and Madras dioceses
with H.G. Dr. Stephanos Mar Theodosius as the first diocesan Metropolitan.
Present diocese of Madras was formed on 1979 and the diocese Metropolitan was
late H.G. Zachariah Mar Dionysius. Diocese of Madras includes the territorial
area of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Andaman island in India,
Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore and churches in far east countries
also.
Since the solemn demise of H.G. Mar Dionysius in 1997, H.G. Dr. Yakob Mar
Irenaios Metropolitan took over the charge of leading the diocese. Now the
diocese have 64 independent parishes, many more congregations including 9
cathedrals. For serving the diocese there are 65 priests including 6
Cor-episcopas, 1 Cor-episcopa ramban, 4 rambans, also have 4 retired priests
who served the diocese with their valuable services.5 deacons as well as 16
seminarians in both the seminaries getting ready to serve in the Diocese.
The diocese have a charitable institution called Snehabhavan, a guidance
centre for the patients who under going the treatment in Christian Medical
College, Vellore.
Mercy Home:- A home for physically challenged children in Eluru, Andhra
Pradesh.Almost all the parishes have elementary and higher secondary schools
adjasent to their churches. Diocese has one degree college in
Narasimharajapuram, South canara, and two colleges running under control of
the parishes. They are St.Mary�s college, Brahmavar, St.Thomas College,
Koyambedu, Chennai.
Another uniqueness of this diocese is non-Malayalee communities consist of
Konkini Christians with Konkini Priests, worshiping in Konkini language in
Brahmavar. Another community of Telugu in Eluru in which more than 300
families of Telugu with Telugu Evanjelists. The diocese also runs 2
guesthouses in Chennai city for the youngsters who came to study as well as
work in Chennai.
