The Mar Gregorios Rehabilitation Centre, a registered, charitable, nonprofit organization in Kerala, India, Started in 1983, in Trivandrum, Kerala by the H.G. Philipos Mar Theophilus, in a small way, the MGRC, initially catered to the needs of the blind and expanded, ten years later, to bring succor to not only the visually impaired but also to the hearing impaired, the orthopaedically handicapped and the mentally retarded persons.

Results

So far, thousands of disabled persons have been interviewed, many hundreds have received assistance through our various programmes and many have started living with dignity. We are continuing our endeavor to create an awareness in the community to view the disabled persons not as a curse but as persons with special abilities and as gifts from God.

Our Programmes

1. Conducting survey in different Panchayats to identify the disabled persons.
2. Counselling them and their family members to bring them out of the shell of disappointment and superstitions.
3. Arranging for medical assessment to find out the extent and nature of disabilities and possibility of rehabilitation.
4. Arranging for physical rehabilitation according to the need of each individual ie; medical treatment, corrective surgery, physiotherapy and use of prosthesis and other aids.
5. Arranging for training to become self-reliant:
a. Personal training : In daily chores like cooking, washing, bathing and in mobility (particularly for the blind, using cane) etc.
b. Vocational training : To learn a skill such as envelope making, tailoring, computer training, electronic gadgets repairing, furniture caning etc.
6. Economic rehabilitation : Arranging for loans and financial assistance to start small scale business such as petty shop, tea shop, vegetable shop, household goods repair shop, etc. 7. Arranging for sponsors to meet specific needs.
8. Arranging for medical certificates, bus & train passes, pensions and other benefits through governmental and nongovernmental agencies.
9. Providing financial assistance for special tuition and transportation to disabled students.
10. Creating an awareness through disability prevention programmes.

Technical Support

Various governmental and nongovernmental agencies have been very cooperative and have extended their whole hearted support to the programmes of MGRC. A few such organizations are the Christoffel Blinden Mission (CBM), Germany; Medical College, Trivandrum, Govt. Eye Hospital, Trivandrum; Kerala State Handicapped Persons Welfare Corporation and Vocational Rehabilitation Centre (Govt. of India), Trivandrum.

Financial Support

The financial support received since 1993 from Christoffel Blinden Mission has been very important. However, their support has almost waned out and we are at a crucial juncture now to find other sources of financial assistance.

Management and Staff

MGRC is managed by an Executive Committee elected every year by the General Body. We have a total staff strength of 18, including the field workers.

Conclusion

MGRC is working among the poorest of poor and in trying to bring succor to the most unfortunate sections of the society. We consider it as a Godgiven responsibility to enable the disabled people in the area to change from living objects of pity to productive, dignified and participating members of the community.
