History: Assyrian Church of the East known in India as Chaldean Syrian Church of the East is founded by St. Thomas, the Apostle. The St.Thomas Christian of India from early centuries and relations with Chaldean Syrian Church of the East founded by Mar Thoma, Mar Barthelomeu, Mar Adhai and Mar Mari. Mar Adhai and Mar Mari were among the seventy disciples of Jesus. It was a flourishing Church.  By 90 A.D. this Church had 19 Episcopal sees from Mesopotamia to China and Japan.  This Church was also known as Nestorian or Assyrian Church.  It uses Armaic in liturgy. Bishops and Christian leaders used to come to India from Mesopotomia.   The Portuguese missionaries who came to India in the 16th century tried to break this tradition and Latinize them. During this period, in 1796, Saktan Thampuram the then king of Cochin State has invited 52 families to Thrissur for the promotion of trade and commerce.  They were given land and other privileges.  It is here Martha Mariam Valiya Pally of Thrissur is built in 1814.

This community flourished and wanted to retain their identity.  They tried to get bishops from Chaldean church.  Mar Rockose (1861-’62) and Mar Meluse (1874-’82) were the first bishops they got.  Mar Oudiso (1882-1900), Cor-Episcopa Mihael Augustine (1900-’08). Mar Timotheos (1908-’45) succeeded them. There was no bishop from 1945 to ’52.  Next bishop from Chaldean Church was Mar Thoma Darmo (1952-’68).  During his period there was a split in the Church.  In 1964 Mar Simeon, Patriarch of Chaldean Church decided to follow Gregorian calendar.  Mar Darmo and a group opposed it.  They elected Mar Thoma Darmo as 120th Patriarch.  Mar Darmo went back to Chaldean in 1968.  He appointed Mar Aprem, as bishop.  Paulose Mar Paulose was also consecrated in 1968.  But he came to India only in 1976.  In 1972, Mar Simeon ordained Mar Timotheus as Metropolitan of India.  So both groups of the Church had metropolitans in India.  Efforts for unity in the Church got realised in Nov. 1995.  Now, the Church is one under Mar Dinha IV. Mar Aprem is the Metropolitan in India and Mar Timotheos delegate of the Patriarch.

Vasco de Gama came to south India in 1498 AD. In the Synod of Diamper in June 1599, Archbishop Alexio de Menezes forced the Syrian Christian community to be under the obedience of the Pope of Rome.

In January 1653 thousands of these Christians in Malabar took an oath with a rope tied on a bend Cross and liberated themselves from the Portuguese fold. In 1665 a Metropolitan came from the East. Mar Gregorius of Jerusalem was his name. The Patriarch of Antioch sent him. The Syrian Christians received him. They were not aware of the split of the Syrian Christian community to East Syrian and West Syrian Churches. At that time no bishops came from the Church in Baghdad. The Patriarchate had been moved from Baghdad to different places and finally it was in Qudshanis in Kurdistan.

In 1796 AD. the Shakthan Thampuran, the famous Maharaja of erstwhile Cochin State (now part of Kerala) brought 52  Christian families to Thrissur with a view to develop Trichur as a center of trade and commerce.  The Mart Mariam Big Church was constructed in 1814 AD for the worship of those Christian families.

This Church is under the Catholicos Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East. The present Catholicos Patriarch H.H. Mar Dinkha IV is residing in Chicago, U.S.A.  His Holiness Mar Dinkha IV was born in Northern Iraq on 15 September 1935. He became bishop in Teheran, Iran on 11 February 1962. He was consecrated Catholicos Patriarch on 17 October 1976.

There are three archbishops (Lebanon, India and Iraq), and eight bishops under the Catholicos Patriarch.

This Church now uses the Gregorian calendar. Patriarch and Pope John Paul II signed a Common Christo logical Declaration on 11 November 1994 in Vatican.

The Church in India has 29 parishes, out of which five are outside Kerala such as Coimbatore, Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi.

Mar Dinkha IV

His Holiness’ father Andrews, one of the son's of the late Rev. Benyamin, son of Rev. Soro, is from the family of the martyr Mar Dinkha, Bishop of Urmi, Iran.  His Holiness’s mother Panna, also from the same family, was highly respected for her faith, pure Christianity and humanitarian feelings.

Born On 15th Sept he was baptized in St. Koryakos church, on October 25, 1935, in the village Derbendoki from the historical Sub–District of Hareer, where His Holiness was born and where Christianity had flourished in the past.  The relics of the-fourth-century churches like Mar Odisho and Mar Bawai still stand.  Both Christians and Moslems still believe in the sanctity of Derbendoki relics particularly in the medicinal water spring where from they use water for curing their chronic diseases or ailments, as they consider the water sacred, springing from under a hill on the top of which the relics of an old Assyrian Monastery can be seen.  Here in the church of martyr Mar Koryakus the baby was christened and named KHANANIA,   Mercy of God.

Andrews was the son of  Qasha Benyamin in the family of Mar Dinkha which had supplied about 17 bishops to the Assyrian Church of the East. The last of these bishops in the family of Mar Dinkha was martyred in February 1915 near Urmia.

The martyr bishop Mar Dinkha was a cousin of priest Benyamin. There were no bishops in the diocese of Mar Dinkha from 1915 to 1962.

When Khanania was born in 1935 nobody predicted that he was going to be a bishop or later a Catholicos Patriarch. Yet his mother Panna abstained from meat when she was pregnant with her firstborn. Later she delivered one more son who is a deacon now in San Jose, California and a daughter named Victoria who lives in Teheran with her family and grand children. His mother Panna died in 1968 and was buried in Teheran. His father Andrews died in San Jose, California on 25 December 1999. Patriarch’s younger brother Ezaria became a deacon and serves in the church of St.Joseph in San Jose, California where he lives with his wife.

Darbandoki is the village near Arbil in Northern Iraq where he was born. Arbil is famous being the home for Mar Oudisho and Mar Qardagh, the martyr.

Priest Benyamin trained his grandson Khanania. Then they sent him to the spiritual care of Mar Yosip Khananisho Metropolitan in Harir. Mar Yosip Khananisho Metropolitan sent him to the seminary in Baghdad in 1947. The Metropolitan ordained him deacon at Mar Yokhanan Church in Harir in 1950. He raised him to priesthood on 15 July 1957.

On December 15, 1957 he went to Abadan, Iran.  He did holy Qurbana  on 7th January 1958 for Christmas. On 25th January 1958 Rev.Khanania moved from Abadan to Teheran, capital city of Iran.

Rev. Khanania was a hard worker. He built the Mar Gewargis Church in Teheran. He started a school in Teheran. He organized the Assyrians in Teheran. The Assyrians in Iran were happy because although they had no bishop in Iran for 43 years here was a young celibate priest who was a hard working clergyman.  Though the priest was only 23 years old he demonstrated the ability and maturity of an experienced priest. His name spread outside the country of Iran or Asia.

The Catholicos Patriarch of the Assyrian Church Mar Eshai Shimun heard about his sterling qualities from Mar Khananisho Metropolitan. Thus Rev. Khannania was chosen to be bishop. Patriarch Mar Eshai Shimun came to Teheran on his return journey from India and consecrated Rev, Khanania as a bishop on 11 February 1962.

Qasha Benyamin, grandfather of Qasha Khanania, was alive when the grandson was doing great work in Teheran. The grandfather would have rejoiced to see his grandson priest to become a bishop. But a few months before Mar Dinkha became a bishop, the old priest Qasha Benyamin died in Iraq. He was 105 years old when he passed away. It took a long time for the grandson to hear the sad news of the death of his grandfather. There was no much communication between Iran and Iraq.

The Church in Iran was without any   Bishop after the First World War.*  The missionary activities in Iran had ended.  The Persian government prohibited in 1928 the Bible in the schools.  The Persian government took over all schools in the forties.  In 1934 the government of Iran asked all the "foreigners" to evacuate Azerbaijan.

On 17 October 1976 Mar Dinkha was consecrated as the Patriarch of the universal Assyrian Church of the East.

Mart Mariam Big Church

In 1796 A D., the Sakthan Thampuran, King of erstwhile Cochin State (now part of Kerala) brought 52 Christian families to Trichur from the neighbourhood with a view to develop Trichur as a center of trade and commerce.  The Marth Mariam Church was constructed in 1814 for the worship of those Christian families. Abraham Cathanar of Palai dedicated the Church in 1815 by the command of King of Cochin state, Ramavarma, successor of the successor of the famous Sakthan Thampuran, who had settled down this community in Trichur.

The original name of this church,  which  is the oldest church in Trichur town, was “Vyakula Mathavin Pally”. Since the Roman Catholics      began to argue that this church was a Catholic Church, the authorities of this church changed     the name to Marth Mariam, which is the Syriac translation of the name St. Mary, Vyakula Mathavu also referred to the mother of Jesus Christ. The Chaldean Syrians of Trichur prefer to use the title Mother of Christ , while the Catholics and the Orthodox insist on the expression Mother of God.

The question of the faith of those Christian families has been debated in the various   litigations.  The litigations took a more serious turn after the arrival of Mar Abimalek Timotheus Metropolitan in February 1908, sent by the Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East from Kurdistan in the Middle East.  The final settlement of the litigations in the District Court of Trichur and Royal Court of Cochin was by the ‘Award’ of Mr. C.W.E. Cotton, the British Political Agent who was the arbitrator appointed by the Maharaja of Cochin state.  His Award was announced on 18th April 1925 at Bolghatty Residency, Ernakulam that was the capital of the Cochin State.  The Plaintiffs-Appellants of the Trichur case later joined Catholic Church and constructed the famous “Puthan Pally” near the old Church in the name of Vyakula Mathavu (Lady of Dolours). Now it is known as Basilica. It is the biggest church building in India.

Two Metropolitans from the Middle East (Mar Thoma Rokos 1861-62 and Mar Elia Mellus 1874-82) and a Metropolitan from the neighborhood of Palai (Mar Abdisho Thondanatt)  served the Big Church.  The Chaldean Syrians of Trichur claim their origin not to 1814 A.D. when the Big Church was constructed, but to 52 A.D. to the Mission of St. Thomas. Like the other Syrian Christian denominations of Kerala, the Chaldean Syrians of Trichur claim to be the faithful descendants of the first century converts of St. Thomas.

Mar Abdisho Thondanat  Metropolitan died in November 1900 A.D.  From 1900-1908 Michael Augustine Cor -Episcopa from Mosul ruled the Church in the absence of a Metropolitan.

  1908 – 1945       Mar Abimalek Timotheus Metropolitan

  1945 -  1952      There was no Metropolitan

In June 1952 Mar Thoma Darmo Metropolitan arrived and served the Archdiocese until he left India on 7th September, 1968. During his time the Chaldean Syrian Church in Trichur was divided into two groups. The Patriarchal group in 1964 adopted the western calendar prepared by Pope Gregory in October 1582. The Metropolitan group continued the eastern calendar, which was in use from the time of Julius Caesar before the time of Jesus. This group was governed by the Metropolitan Mar Aprem (George Mooken from Trichur) since October 1968 and the Patriarchal group was governed by Mar Timotheus Metropolitan (C.C.Timothy, Choondal House) from January 1972.

In November 1995 both groups were united again under the universal headship of Mar Dinkha IV, Catholicos Patriarch who resides in Chicago. The Patriarch visited the churches and institutions in Trichur in January 2000. Mar Timotheus Metropolitan died on 6 August 2001.

Bishop Poulose Mar Poulose, who belonged to the Metropolitan Group, died on 24 March 1998 during a bye Pass surgery in Apollo Hospital in Chennai . He was only 56 years old. He was the Chairman of the World Student Christian Federation (WSCF), Geneva  and was well known in the church and society as an intellectual.

The church is governed by Mar Aprem Metropolitan. There are 29 parishes and thirty thousand faithful. There is a Higher Secondary school, a High School and three Primary schools. There is a printing technology school, a parallel College for Girls, Orphanage and other institutions.

This community was active in politics. Jawaharlal Nehru along with his wife Kamala and daughter Indira visited Mar Timotheus Metropolitan on 29 May 1931 during his first visit to Trichur town. Nehru has written about this visit in his An Autobiography with Musings on Recent Events in India, London, 1958, pages 273-4. Mahatma Gandhi had a famous meeting with this foreign bishop in Trichur on January 17,  1934.

Two leaders of this community were in Travancore-Cochin assembly. Mooken Ouseph Thomakutty was an M.L.C.during 1945-1948 in the assembly of the Cochin state representing commerce constituency..   Mr.O.T.Inasu was an M.L.C during 1948 to 1951. Advocate P.P. Devassy who was a Vice Chairman in Trichur Municipality from 10 December 1938 till 11 November 1941,contested the election to the assembly and won.

Among the Municipal Chairmen of Trichur town two were from this community. N.O.Inasu (Nadakavukaren House) from 13 January 1935 to 16 November 1938 and Advocate P.P.Devassy from 24 January 1949 to 8 January 1952. Two others served as Vice Chairman, namely C.T.Kurien (Chakola) in 1954 from January to July  and E.L. Jos from 20 Sept 1983 to 30 September 1984.

At present there are no members from this community in the City Corporation. The members of this church  do not favour a single political party. Most political parties in Trichur have members from this church. Dr.Dorothy Chacko, an American doctor who married a deacon from Trichur Dr. Professor C.J.Chacko, was given Padmasree award by V.V.Giri, President of India. Professor Chacko earned Ph.D. in Political Science from the famous Columbia University in New York city way back in 1932
